Planning your Visit

Directions

Directions to the Lamar Heritage and Cultural Center in Middletown, Maryland.

From Washington D.C.

Take Interstate Route 270 west to the intersection with Interstate Route 70. Take Interstate Route 70 west to exit 49 Braddock Heights. Turn left on U.S. Route 40 Alternate and proceed west approximately 4 miles.

From Frederick, Maryland.

Take U.S. Route 40 Alternate west approximately 8 miles.

From Leesburg, Virginia.

Take Route 15 north towards Frederick, Maryland. Just before Frederick take Interstate Route 70 west to exit 49 Braddock Heights. Turn left on U.S. Route 40 Alternate and proceed west approximately 4 miles.

From Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.

Take Route 340 north to Route 15. Take Route 15 north towards Frederick, Maryland. Just before Frederick take Interstate Route 70 west to exit 49 Braddock Heights. Turn left on U.S. Route 40 Alternate and proceed west approximately 4 miles.

From Hagerstown, Maryland.

Take U.S. Route 40 Alternate east approximately 15 miles. You will travel through Boonsboro, Maryland and Turner's Gap on your way to Middletown, Maryland.

From Antietam National Battlefield Park

Take Route 65 south to Sharpsburg, Maryland. At Sharpsburg turn left onto Route 34. Take Route 34 northeast approximately 6 miles to Boonsboro, Maryland. At Boonsboro turn right onto U.S. 40 Alternate. Take U.S. Route 40 Alternate east approximately 7 miles. You will travel through Turner's Gap on your way to Middletown, Maryland.

Where to Start

Begin your tour at the Lamar Heritage and Culture Center and pick up a guide to the South Mountain Battlefield and brochures to the other sites. While you are there, take in the Lamar exhibit.

Allow at least an hour of time to drive the battlefield and to visit the Dahlgren Chapel, Fox's Gap, Turner's Gap, Crampton's Gap, the War Correspondents Memorial Arch at Gathland State Park, and the Washington Monument State Park (also the location of the South Mountain State Battlefield Headquarters).
