Lamar Sanitarium - Lamar Heritage and Culture Center

Located at 200 West Main Street in historic Middletown, MD, the Lamar house was the location of a turn-of-the-century rural medical sanitarium.

The site preserves Dr. Lamar's operating and recovery rooms, library and medical equipment. The building serves as the headquarters for the CMHL organization. 

Short Term Goals

  • Host school field trips.
  • Create and exhibit depicting a turn-of-the-century rural medical facility.
  • Establish a central depository for South Mountain Battlefield materials, including regimental histories, letters, diaries and artifacts.
  • Host authors' lectures.
  • Organize community meetings.
  • Sponsor art exhibitions.

Long Term Goals

  • Establish an information center for the South Mountain State Battlefield
  • Establish conference center.
  • Develop special interest workshops.
  • Organize research library and photo depository.

The State of Maryland pledged $100,000.00 to purchase the site and CMHL raise the same amount in matching gift funds.
