by
Bill Groff. Maj. Gen. John C. Breckinridge at the Worthington House, Frederick, MD., The
Battle of Monocacy, July 9, 1864.
In July of 1864, Lieutenant General Jubal A.
Early and his army of approximately 18,000 Confederates passed through Frederick, MD on
their way to attack Washington. Union Major General Lew Wallace hastily assembled a force
of 7,500 men to defend the B&O railroad at Monocacy Junction and the highways leading
to Washington and Baltimore. On July 9, 1864, Early and Wallace forces clashed along the
banks of the Monocacy River in what would be known as the "Battle of Monocacy."
Major General John C. Breckinridge, the former Vice-President of the United States,
ordered Major General John Gordon's infantry division to attack the Federals and crossed
the Monocacy River himself to watch the final assault from the Worthington front yard.
In his painting, Bill Groff has painstakingly reconstructed the details of the
Worthington House as they appeared in 1864.

"Winter's Peace at South Mountain"
Limited Edition Print
by Harry L. Richardson.
The brick farmhouse featured in this painting is
known by Civil War historians as the Daniel Sheffer farm. It is located in Frederick
County, Maryland near the South Mountain Battlefield. As one of the principal advance
routes for Union Army Gen. Joseph Hooker's I Corps during the Battle of South Mountain on
September 14, 1862, the farm was an important field hospital during and after the battle.
Located on Mt. Tabor Road, the house was visited by future president William McKinley,
who fought in the battle. Maryland Artist Harry Richardson has painted the house and
outbuildings as they might have looked during the winter of 1862. The silent blanket of
fresh snow erases any evidence of the bitter struggle that took place near this site a few
weeks earlier. Harry L. Richardson has donated a special conservation edition of 100
signed and numbered prints of this new painting to the CMHL to be sold for fund-raising
purposes.
