The South Mountain Battlefield lies across three gaps, Crampton's, Fox's & Turner's Gap. Turner's is open for guided tours Saturday and Sunday from 10am - 4pm April - October. We are open by appointment during the week and from November to March. We welcome group trips, school programs, and Girl / Boy Scouts. Directions & Parking
The Battlefield is mostly private land and we ask that you respect the privacy of the individual land owners. For a walking tour of the battlefield, please visit the Washington Monument State Park located atop South Mountain on the lines of Washington & Frederick Counties. South Mountain State Battlefield Visitors Center Department of Natural Resources web site located at 200 West Main Street in the heart of historic Middletown, MD just 20 minutes west of Frederick.
To visit Washington Monument State Park
From Frederick: Travel I 70 West to Exit Braddock Heights/Middletown. At the light turn left and travel ALT 40 for 3.7 miles. The Museum is on the left.
From Boonsboro/Sharpsburg/WV: Travel Alt 40 East (Old National Pike) East. Once you come into Middletown proper, the museum is 1.2 miles from the pillars and located on the right.
From Hagerstown/PA: Travel I 70 East to Exit Myersville/Middletown. Turn right at the top of the exit ramp. Travel so many miles on Route 17. At the light, turn right on to Main Street (ALT 40 or Old National Pike). The museum is located on the right.
Parking is free and plentiful at the Elm Street Lot conveniently located next to the museum. Street parking is available as well.

Dahlgren Chapel While you are in town, take a drive up to South Mountain and visit Dahlgren Chapel, constructed in 1881 for the private use of Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren and her family. Across the street you will find the Old South Mountain Inn. Originally called Fairview, this was the summer home of the Dahlgren Family. Today, it is a lovely restaurant and bar.
